How to measure for curtains

by Sandie on March 29, 2010

To ensure your curtains will be the best possible fit, please take time to measure your window carefully.

We would always recommend using a steel tape measure for accuracy.

The first step is to decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a track or a pole, both of which should be positioned approx 15cm (6 inches) above the window and extend 15-20cm (6-8 inches) either side. (These measurements are only a guide).

Remember that if you are fitting a pole, your curtains will hang below the pole, so this must be high enough to cover the top of the window. It can sometimes be easier to fit a batten above the window and then  place your track or pole here.

Always try to fit your track or pole before taking final measurements.

Measuring the width

Measure the total width of the track or pole (excluding the finials).
Don’t forget to allow for an overlap – this is an additional measurement, normally 5cm (2 inches) that allows the hanging curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed.

Measuring the length

Before measuring the length, decide whether you want your curtains to fall to the sill, below the sill or to the floor, or even pool on the floor. This has become a popular style in the last few years.

Measuring curtains for tracks

Measure from the top of the track.

Measuring curtains for poles

Pencil pleat curtains/triple pleat curtains etc: Measure from the eye – the small metal ring at the bottom of each curtain ring. This will prevent the pole or rings from being obscured by the curtain. Use this method for all curtains that hang below a pole.

Tab top and eyelet curtains: Measure from the very top of the pole for both styles, but add on an extra 3 cm per drop for eyelet headings as the eyelet is fitted approx 2.5cm down from the top of the curtain.

We would advise that;

Sill length curtains finish approx 1.25cm (1/2 inch) above the sill.

Curtains that fall below the sill finish approx 15cm (6 inches) below.

Floor length curtains finish approx 1.5cm (1/2 inch) from the floor.

Overlong curtains can be 4 – 6″ longer than necessary.

Check for uneven floors, walls etc and take into account if a carpet is being laid.
